Summary
One of a number of Roman graves revealed during a watching brief by Wessex Archaeology on a pipeline running through the industrial estates to the east of Poundbury Camp in 1986. The chalk-cut grave was aligned SW-NE and contained the supine extended inhumation of an adult, with the head to the southwest, lying within an outline of 36 coffin nails. Hobnails were found with this burial, which was part of the Late Roman northern peripheral cemetery at Poundbury.

Full Description
Grave 178 was one of a number of Roman graves revealed during a watching brief by Wessex Archaeology on a pipeline running through the industrial estates to the east of Poundbury Camp in 1986 (1) (2) (3) (4). The chalk-cut grave was aligned SW-NE and contained the supine extended inhumation of an adult, with the head to the southwest, lying within an outline of 36 coffin nails. The arms had been crossed over the stomach. Hobnails were found with this burial.
This burial was part of the Late Roman northern peripheral cemetery at Poundbury (5).
