Monument record MDO19921 - The Rectory, South Street, Bridport: Post-medieval structure

The remains of a possible wall running E-W across the west end of the garden of the Rectory, South Street, Bridport were found during an evaluation of the site by Bournemouth University in 1996. This was suggested as being part of a building shown on Hutchins’ 1774 map of Bridport, but may be no more than a garden wall.

The remains of a possible stone wall were found during an evaluation of the rear garden of the Rectory, South Street, Bridport, by Bournemouth University in 1996. At the southern end of Trench II were the remains of a wall running roughly E-W. A single course of this possible wall was revealed. It was composed of limestone rubble bonded with a loose earthy mortar. Only the northern face of this wall was revealed and this was rather irregular. The total thickness of the wall must have been over 0.75m. A number of pot sherds and fragments of clay tobacco pipe were found in the mortar bonding. It was suggested by the excavators that this represents the remains of a building shown on Hutchins 1774 map (1) (2). However, this is not in quite the right position and it may be no more than a garden wall
