Abstract/Summary
'Archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by AC archaeology in October 2016 during groundworks associated with the construction of an extension to a building on land at Hill Close Lodge, Studland, Dorset (NGR: 403209, 082197). The proposed development is located close to the eastern boundary of a scheduled monument (no. 22978), comprising a Romano-British farmstead and earlier structures at Woodhouse Hill. Features dating to the earlier Romano-British period were found within the footprint of the extension, and comprised a ditch and isolated pit. Both were shallow and filled with silty deposits from which very few artefacts were recovered. The proximity of these features to the scheduled monument implies that they are contemporary with the previously identified Roman-British farmstead, although the general paucity of finds recovered suggesting this was an outlying area away from the focus of the settlement.'
