Summary

Second World War beach scaffolding is visible on aerial photographs of 1945 along the seafront, extending from Bournemouth to Southbourne (see child records for details of individual stretches of beach scaffolding). Associated anti-invasion obstacles, consisting of uneven piles of rocks are located at Southbourne (see MDO28594).

Full Description

Second World War beach scaffolding is visible on aerial photographs of 1945 along the seafront, extending from Bournemouth to Southbourne. (For example 1, but see individual child records for photograph references for individual stretches of beach scaffolding). Beach scaffolding was constructed of wire held by two lines of tubular steel scaffolding braced from behind by steel struts. The scaffolding was arranged in lines along the front of the beach to impede landing craft and was removed immediately after the war. It is no longer visible on the most recent comprehensive photographic coverage available to the survey (2) Associated anti-invasion obstacles, consisting of uneven piles of rocks are located at Southbourne (see MDO28594). This site was digitally plotted during the South West Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment Survey (Dorset).
