Full Description

Pits containing large quantities of hearthstone were a particular feature in Field F, probably for obtaining iron and iron oxide. A number of pits had large deposits of Iron Age pottery. Higher concentrations of Iron Age pits in the southern half of the field. Narrow, straight sided postholes also excavated. A series of large postholes demonstrated a north-south alignment. A number of postholes had large boulders of mudstone in their fill, perhaps used as a wedge to secure a post (1) In 1998 25 features were excavated and attributed to the iron age on the basis of ceramic evidence and 11 pits were noted dating to the Roman period (2)
